Teri Hatcher helped put molester behind bars;
SHE ALLEGES ABUSE BY SAME MAN: HER UNCLE
By Julia Prodis Sulek and John Woolfolk
Mercury News

For almost four years, Santa Clara County prosecutor Chuck Gillingham kept secret the name of the woman who helped put away a Sunnyvale child molester whose young victim killed herself.

The woman put aside concerns about her career and called Gillingham from her home in Los Angeles to say that she, too, had been molested as a child by the same man. The woman's name? Teri Hatcher, one of Hollywood's hottest TV actress starring in ABC's hit show, ``Desperate Housewives.''

Hatcher tells her story in the April issue of Vanity Fair Magazine, which hits newsstands this week.

``At the end of the day, there was no way I was not going to put this girl first, before whatever damage might be done to me,'' Hatcher told the magazine.

Hatcher, 41, who grew up in Sunnyvale, is the niece of Richard Hayes Stone, who is serving a 14-year sentence for molesting Sarah Van Cleemput and a 12-year-old girl. Sarah, just 14, committed suicide in January 2002, leaving a mysterious note that pointed to her abuser.

Without her testimony, Gillingham was worried he didn't have enough evidence to convict Stone. The case, he feared, was doomed.

Then he got a call from Hatcher.

``The case was on the verge of being dismissed at about the time she made contact with us,'' Gillingham told the Mercury News on Tuesday.

Even though Stone, who is now 67, had told police he had a ``passionate kiss'' with Sarah, which itself would constitute child molestation, a confession alone would not be enough for conviction. Gillingham also had the girl's suicide note, but it was vague, saying only ``ask Dick'' about why she would kill herself.

Gillingham needed corroborating evidence.

``She asked what I thought,'' about coming forward, Gillingham said of Hatcher. ``I said, `I'm going to beg you to be involved, as hard as that is for you.'''

Gillingham flew down to Los Angeles with a Sunnyvale public safety officer to take Hatcher's statement.

``When we went to interview her, she almost canceled,'' Gillingham said. ``But she had been with her daughter that morning and was thinking if, God forbid, something happened to her daughter that someone would come forward and do the right thing.''

With a tape recording running, Hatcher explained in detail how her uncle -- the then-husband of her mother's sister -- allegedly molested her in the late 1960s and early 1970s when she was no more than seven years old.

``She had committed she would come forward and testify and everything that might entail,'' Gillingham said. ``Obviously she took a big risk doing the interview. We had to turn it over to the defense.''

After the defense got a transcript of Hatcher's interview, Stone pleaded guilty on Oct. 24, 2002, leaving no need for a trial nor a court appearance for Hatcher.

Eric Geffon, who represented Stone at the time, did not respond to phone calls Tuesday.

Hatcher learned about the Van Cleemput case during a trip to Sunnyvale to help her parents with a garage sale at their Templeton Court home before they moved to Southern California. Her mother handed her news clippings about Sarah's suicide and Stone's subsequent arrest on charges of sexually molesting the girl, who lived across the street from him.

``It struck me so strongly that -- oh my God, he's been doing this for 35 years!'' Hatcher told Vanity Fair contributing editor Leslie Bennetts. ``I was just blown over by this girl's pain. I thought, boy, that's really close to being me, any day of the week. I could feel that sort of pain.''

At that time in the actress's life, she was going through a divorce and her career was tanking. Hatcher hadn't even told her parents about what her uncle allegedly had done to her.

If her story of molestation came out in the tabloids, she told Vanity Fair, she worried she would be viewed as a has-been actress trying to get attention.

Gillingham said he is thankful Hatcher chose to do the right thing.

``I thought she was extraordinarily courageous,'' Gillingham said. ``At all times, she felt deeply about the victim in our case.''

The Van Cleemputs didn't know until Gillingham told them Monday that that their secret savior who helped their case was actress Teri Hatcher.

``They were aware someone had come forward at almost the 11th hour, but they didn't know who it was,'' Gillingham said. ``They were obviously floored by the whole thing.''

Stone was a trusted family friend of the Van Cleemputs, who had emigrated from Belgium to Sunnyvale where Patrick Van Cleemput worked for semiconductor maker Novellus Systems. Van Cleemput said he became fast friends with Stone, an engineer at National Semiconductor, whose quiet nature reminded Van Cleemput of his own father. The families vacationed together.

Van Cleemputs said he wasn't concerned when Stone asked if Sarah could join him for a day trip to his second home in Boulder Creek, which needed cleaning.

``We were stupid enough to let her go,'' Van Cleemput told the Mercury News in June 2002.

In an e-mail to the Mercury News on Tuesday, Sarah's parents and older sister also called Hatcher a ``very courageous woman.''

``The only thing we want to accomplish is to prevent other adolescents or young adults from going as far as Sarah went to be free from molestation,'' Patrick Van Cleemput, Sarah's father, wrote.

HATCHER'S TRUST ISSUES AFTER CHILD ABUSE

LATEST: TERI HATCHER finds it difficult to trust men after enduring sexual abuse at the hands of her uncle as a child.

The DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES star bravely assisted police in jailing paedophile RICHARD HAYES STONE when she heard his abuse had driven a teenager to suicide.

But despite having moved on with her life, Hatcher, who was molested by Stone between the ages of five to eight, has suffered a disastrous love life as a result of her horrific experiences.

She says, "I am a woman who carries around all these layers of fear and vulnerability.

"The biggest effect to me is this area of love and men, which hasn't been so great." (ZJS/WNTSU/ES)

Teri Hatcher reveals sex abuse by an uncle

By Robin Abcarian

Los Angeles Times

Teri Hatcher, whose acting career was revived by her turn as a desperate housewife on secrets-laden Wisteria Lane, has carried a dark secret of her own for 35 years, revealed this week in a Vanity Fair cover story by contributing editor Leslie Bennetts.

Hatcher, 41, said she was sexually abused by her uncle, Richard Hayes Stone, for three or four years, starting when she was 5. Her parents, she said, never became aware of what was happening, though her mother seemed to sense something amiss after Hatcher "went ballistic" when her uncle and aunt were invited to dinner when she was 8 or 9.

Her mother, she said, "felt like something weird was happening, and she removed me from the situation, but she never asked me about it. After that, I didn't see my aunt and uncle." Hatcher told no one of the abuse, Bennetts writes.

In 2002, before "Desperate Housewives" relaunched her career, she was helping her parents move from Sunnyvale, Calif., to Laguna Beach, Calif. Hatcher's mother handed her some recent newspaper clippings: Stone had been arrested and charged with three counts of sexually molesting the daughter of a neighbor. His victim, Sarah Van Cleemput, had killed herself, leaving a note that said, "You're probably thinking a normal person doesn't do this, well ask Dick."

After agonizing about whether to come forward, she contacted prosecutors, whose case had been stymied by a lack of evidence. Prosecutors believed that Stone, who had admitted only to a passionate kiss with Sarah, had abused three other girls, but were unable to persuade any to come forward.

"Without Teri, this case would have been dismissed," Santa Clara County prosecutor Chuck Gillingham told Vanity Fair. "But she volunteered to talk about the most heinous thing that could happen to a child, with no upside for her. ... She is a damn good person."

Stone pleaded guilty to four counts of molestation and was sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Hatcher, who had worried about the fallout from publicly testifying against Stone, had expected that her uncle would deny the accusations and was relieved by the guilty plea, which eliminated the need for a trial.

"Here's what I anticipated," Hatcher said. "He did this, he gets off and Teri ends up on the cover of a tabloid." Hatcher, writes Bennetts, "couldn't bear the idea that cynics might accuse her of going public with her story to get attention and resuscitate an expiring career."

Thanks to Stone's plea, Hatcher's involvement in the case was not made public. She had not planned to discuss the story with Vanity Fair either (which may explain her jarring choice of attire on the magazine's cover, given her revelations -- barely there bikini bottoms). The magazine was featuring her because she is about to publish a self-help book called "Burnt Toast" in May. (She does not mention the abuse in the book.)

She decided to talk because the burden of such a secret is a heavy one, because no one could accuse her now of trying to promote her career from it and, most important, she tells Bennetts, because she has a young daughter.
